Review: Lady Gaga’s “Perfect Illusion”

The three year long wait has finally ended! Lady Gaga’s new single “Perfect Illusion” was released on September 9th while the music video was released September 20th. Although she kept busy with Tony Bennett after releasing ARTPOP, this Little Monster is ready for her upcoming (solo) album entitled “Joanne”.

Gaga co-wrote and co-produced this track with Mark Ronson, Kevin Parker of Tame Impala (one of my favorite bands!), and BloodPop. It is her shortest single to date and quite evident that it was a deliberate choice. The lyrics are very concise and easy to relate to, whereas her previous albums left you wondering and making several inferences. The sound is less of her typical disco/dance and emits more rock feels, which could foreshadow the direction of the entire new album. The song has a lot of energy and is almost dizzying, but is great nonetheless.

Her style in the video is very normal, which is different than we’re used to seeing from her. She wears cut-off shorts and t-shirts with combat boots and a pony tail. Even her makeup is very scaled back. There are no theatrics nor wild outifts; it’s merely Gaga singing to a crowd in a concert-type setting. Her style along with the different sound tell us that this will perhaps be her transition to a more “stripped” version of herself.

Overall, I think this track is splendid and I look forward to listening to the new album!
